Healthy Drinks for SummerAs summer arrives with it’s oppressive temperatures, beat the heat by staying well hydrated. Water is the better beverage choice for staying hydrated, but plain water can get boring. Try these fun and healthy drinks to stay well hydrated at the pool, in the backyard or wherever the summer takes you.

Strawberry-Basil Water

Infused waters are an easy way to add flavor and interest without a lot of extra calories. Try different fruit and herb combinations, like cucumber-mint or lemon-lime.

1 pint strawberries, sliced

10 fresh basil leaves, torn

2 quarts water

Combine strawberries and basil in a large pitcher. Add 2 quarts water. Refrigerate at least 3 hours or up to 2 days.

Fresh Mint Iced Tea

With the added flavors of mint and lemon, you won’t need much sugar for this refreshing tea. Plus green tea is bursting with heart-healthy antioxidants.

2 quarts water

8 green tea bags

1/3 cup sugar

1 cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves

1 lemon, cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices

Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan. Remove from heat and add tea bags. Cover and let steep 2 to 3 minutes. Remove tea bags, and pour tea into a large pitcher. Add sugar; stir until dissolved. Add mint and lemon. Refrigerate until chilled.

Agua Fresca 

Sweet watermelon and tart lime juice combine in this ultra-refreshing perfect-for-summer beverage. Substitute lime-flavored sparkling water for the plain water to create a Watermelon Sparkler. For a touch of flair, serve with frozen raspberries to serve as ice cubes.

6 cups cubed seedless watermelon (from 5 lb melon)

1 cup water

2 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

Place watermelon in a blender. Cover and process until smooth. Strain through a sieve into a large pitcher. Add water, sugar and lime juice; stir until well blended. Cover and chill at least 2 hours.
